Can I decide what I want my donation to support?
ARP has several program options to which you may contribute. They are:

    • ARP Action - Unrestricted gifts to support the areas of greatest need
    • Mary Benson House - A home-like setting that provides 24-hour housing and substance abuse treatment for adult pregnant and/or parenting women and their children from birth to five years old. Our goal is to ensure that healthy babies are born while helping mothers move toward recovery and maintain a stable, sober, independent life with their children.
    • Prevention - Programs for youth, families, workplace and communities to reduce substance abuse risk factors and promote wellness
    • Youth Services - An array of educational and treatment programs for youth, ages 12 to 17. Participants begin to understand what they have been seeking from drugs or alcohol and develop the ability to meet their needs in healthy ways.
    • Adult Services - Treatment programs are often geared toward specific populations including: pregnant women; those with addictions to methamphetamine, stimulants and cocaine; people with co-occurring disorders including mental health and developmental disabilities; people with health issues such as HIV/AIDS.
    • Neil Dobbins Center - A 16-bed, 24-hour secured facility that provides mental health crisis stabilization and substance abuse detoxification services for adults. Both programs offer assessment, treatment, 24-hour medical supervision, case management, group and individual therapy.
    • Crossroads - Has been helping people in Henderson County lead healthier, more fulfilling lives for more than 15 years. Offers substance abuse diagnostic assessments, mental health and substance abuse treatment, individual and family counseling, DWI education and treatment, and workplace substance abuse assessments and treatment.

    DO I NEED HELP?

I’m embarrassed to talk to anyone about my problem. What other alternatives are there?
Alcohol abuse is causing substantial harm to health and disruption of life for 1 in 13 American adults. More people in the USA suffer with addiction than with any other disease. Each year, untreated addiction kills more people than cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and strokes. If you think you have a problem, please seek help. If not from ARP, then talk to your minister or qualified counselor. The privacy laws protect you. No one you know has to be aware that you’re seeking help. To find out more about addiction, click here.

What can I gain from getting help?
Improved relationships – You can stop feeling like you’re letting everyone down.
Financial stability – Your work won’t suffer and you’ll be spending a lot less on your habit.
Quality of life – Feel better, look better, have more energy for doing things you enjoy.

Why do I need an Assessment?
The purpose of an Assessment is to have a certified or licensed substance abuse professional evaluate whether you have a substance abuse problem and, if you do, assess the severity of that problem. Once this is determined, the professional recommends the corresponding, appropriate level of treatment or education that you need. All Assessments are conducted in a private, confidential manner.

How do I schedule an Assessment?
Assessments are scheduled by appointment. Just call us at 828-254-2700 and ask to schedule an Assessment. Our reception team will first schedule you for an orientation, a no-cost opportunity to find out if our services are a good fit for you. During the orientation, we can also help you complete initial paperwork and schedule an individualized Assessment to help you begin the treatment process.

How much does an Assessment cost?
Costs vary depending on the type of Assessment you require and your funding source. North Carolina DWI Assessments are $100 for each DWI that is outstanding. Out of state DWI is $150 (for NC residents convicted of DWI in another state). General substance abuse assessments ordered by the court or to help you change your life cost $120.00.

Will my boss or family be notified if I seek help?
During our intake process, you’ll be asked to fill out a form that indicates who we may communicate with and under what circumstances. We also ask you who your support group is and we arrange to have team meetings with those individuals, with your consent. Unless your safety or that of another is at risk, you are in total control of who knows you are in treatment.

What are things to remember when coming for an Assessment?

    1. Most assessments will take between 1 - 2 hours but may take longer if the assessor is attempting to secure state funding for your treatment. Do not bring children with you.
    2. Come 15-20 minutes before appointment time to complete initial paperwork.
    3. Bring all medication and a current Medicaid or insurance card. Bring all paperwork related to a court order or arrest. If your Assessment is due to DWI, include blood alcohol (BAC) at the time of arrest (verified by breathalyzer print out), certified BAC copy or blood work results. If you do not have your documentation, you will need to obtain a copy of it from the County Clerk’s office. If your records are no longer available, you will need to obtain a written statement from the Clerk’s Office saying that the records are not available.
    4. If you have been assessed elsewhere, you must have documentation from the prior assessor, including the date of your Assessment and the treatment or education recommendation. DWI Assessments are valid for 6 months. If you have not entered treatment within 6 months of your Assessment, a new Assessment will be required.
    5. Call to let us know if you are unable to keep your appointment.
    6. Bring Assessment fees: General $100; DWI $100 for each outstanding DWI. Out of State DWI - $150. You must bring required paperwork from the other state.
    7. Bring your driving record.

    ASSESSMENTS

Why do I need an Assessment?
The purpose of an Assessment is to have a certified or licensed substance abuse professional evaluate whether you hve a substance abuse problem and if you do, assess the severity of that problem.

    What is a Screening?
If you have had an Assessment at another approved substance abuse program within the past 6 months and you wish to do the recommended treatment at ARP, we will schedule a Screening appointment rather than a full Assessment appointment. However you MUST bring dated documentation from the previous assessor (including the recommended level of care) to the Screening appointment. Without this documentation, a Screening cannot be conducted. In addition, you will be asked to sign a Release for the original full Assessment to be sent to ARP.

How long does an Assessment take?
Most assessments will take between 1 - 2 hours but may take longer if the assessor is attempting to secure state funding for your treatment. During that time, you’ll be tested for the recent use of drugs and alcohol, complete a written questionnaire and have an in-depth clinical interview with a substance abuse professional. A urine drug screen may also be required.

What do I need to bring to an Assessment?
If the Assessment is related to legal charges, including DWI, it is extremely important that all court related paperwork is brought to the Assessment appointment. For DWI Assessments, it is necessary to bring the citation received at the time of arrest showing the BAC and the conviction related judgment paperwork as well as your driving record. Unless you bring the required documentation, we will be unable to process DWI paperwork with the DMV.

How long is an Assessment valid?
Depending on the type, most Assessments are valid for 6 months. After that time, a re-evaluation will be required. In the case of DWI Assessments, they are valid for 6 months from the date of Assessment. However, if treatment is not started within 30 days of the Assessment, an additional appointment to update information will be scheduled at a fee of $50.

Can I bring anyone with me to an Assessment?
Yes, you may bring a family member, case manager, interpreter (if you are non-English speaking. Interpreters must be fluently bilingual individuals unrelated and unknown to you in any way.) or another interested party. They will be asked to complete a written questionnaire about your substance use. If deemed appropriate, the assessor may speak to them at the end of the Assessment if you have signed a Release for us to do so. Please do NOT bring unattended children so that your assessment can be completed quickly and thoroughly.

When will I find out the results of my Assessment?
If you have provided the assessor with the required documentation, most likely you will receive the written results at the end of the Assessment. Exceptions include: if results of a drug screen are pending, or if the assessor thinks that it is necessary to consult with your referral source, ARP Assessment Team and/or Medical Director prior to making a diagnosis and recommendation. If required documentation and fees are not provided, the Assessment will be incomplete/pending until which time as they are received. We are unable to process DMV paperwork until required documentation and fees are received.

    TREATMENT

    What is substance abuse treatment?
Substance abuse treatment is not ‘one size fits all.’ Treatment options (not all of these are offered at ARP) include: inpatient treatment, residential programs, partial hospitalization or day treatment, outpatient and intensive outpatient programs, methadone clinics (also called opioid treatment programs) and detox facilities for street drugs and alcohol. All of those entering treatment receive a clinical Assessment to determine the type of treatment that best suits their needs. Treatment is provided by a team of professionals and para-professionals including substance abuse treatment counselors, psychiatrists and social workers. If ARP cannot provide the type of treatment needed, the client will be referred to an appropriate provider.

Will my family, boss, school, etc. have to know I’m in treatment?
During our intake process, you’ll be asked to fill out a form that indicates who we may communicate with and under what circumstances. We also ask you who your support group is and we arrange to have team meetings with those individuals, with your consent. PREVENTION - Parenting & Family Programs

How will a parenting class help me and my family?
Attending a parenting program doesn’t mean you are a bad parent. We all strive to do our best as parents but all of us can benefit from additional skills and some time to reflect on how we can make better choices. ARP’s scientifically proven parenting and family programs help parents and whole families improve communication, develop closer bonds and reduce behaviors that adversely affect the family. There is also the opportunity to network and learn from other parents and their experiences.

What if I am uncomfortable dealing with family issues in a group forum?
The facilitator establishes conditions of safety, including confidentiality, and parents have the option of not sharing personal information. The groups are educational rather than therapeutic, and therefore disclosure of personal information is not necessary. Also one of our programs is computer-based or accessible via the web and it can be completed in the privacy of your home.

What if I have children in different age brackets?
ARP has a variety of programs. Some are geared for parents with children of a specific age group and others accommodate any age range. The ARP Prevention staff will help you find the right program for you and your children.

What if I am a single parent?
Single parents are encouraged to participate in our parenting programs. In fact, some programs, such as Children in the Middle, are designed to help single parents.

What if my child isn’t interested in participating as a family?
Some (not all) programs are designed for the whole family. It is not unusual for children to be reluctant to attend programs but once they do, children actually enjoy themselves. The programs are designed to engage children. They have fun and want to come back. We can guide you in how best to talk to your children about how attending the programs will help the family and lead to a happier family life.
