    ARP prevention programs intervene as early as preschool to address risk factors for drug abuse. These factors include aggressive behavior, poor social skills and academic difficulties. In addition to drug resistance skills, our school-based programs teach self-control, emotional awareness, communication and social problem-solving. Programs are available for individual youth as well as groups and entire schools. ARP Prevention Services is a strong advocate of asset-based approaches. According to the Search Institute, assets are positive experiences and qualities that help influence choices young people make and help them become caring, responsible adults.

    In addition to providing programs at schools, our prevention professionals train teachers and counselors to facilitate these programs. We also work with schools to identify whether the school “culture” is reducing risk factors and increasing protective factors.

    If our school has a drug problem, what can we do?
    ARP Prevention Services can meet with school administration and discuss available evidence-based options. These range from programming to school climate to broader community engagement options. There are non-programmatic initiatives which do not take up any teaching time, although programming is proven to reduce behavior problems and improve academics, thereby making teaching time more effective.

    It is important to understand the social ecology of drug use, i.e. risk factors associated with each of the following domains: individual, familial, network/peer, organizational/school, community, and social. The school can be involved in reducing risk factors and increasing protective factors on each of these levels by working with community coalitions.
