Family & Parenting

It's a tough world out there, especially for our kids. The pressure to perform well in school, the increased need to fit in and belong with peers, the desire for independence -- all are daily stressors that may prompt youth to escape in unhealthy ways.
The good news is that parents can have a huge impact in preventing drug or alcohol use in their children. In fact, research shows that positive parental relationships are the “anti-drug.”
Our family programs include a focus on parent-child communication; family management; parental empathy and nurturing for children; promotion of the child’s special assets; practice in developing, discussing, and enforcing family policies on substance abuse; and information about drugs and consequences of use.
| "Parents are the single most important influence on children's decision to smoke, drink, or use drugs, yet many parents do not fully understand the extent of their influence."
– The National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University. Malignant Neglect: Substance Abuse and America's Schools. 2001. |
